Essential to becoming a Christian is to rightly understand what Jesus Christ did in order to save sinners - it is in these things that we are called to believe in order to be saved. Let's do it by answering a few vitally important questions about Him and about His work.

Who is Jesus Christ?

That very question might have puzzled you, surely, you might think, it should have been "Who was Jesus Christ?". After all central to a Christian's beliefs is that the man Jesus Christ died. But to understand who Jesus Christ is we need to go back far before His human birth. Indeed what the Bible insists on is that Jesus Christ is (and has always been) God.

What the Bible tells us is that although there is only one God, He has eternally existed in three persons - God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. This is perhaps the greatest mystery of all and yet the Bible insists that it is so and that we must believe it.

We are also told that before God began to create anything, He fully foresaw what would happen if He made the world that He planned to make. He foresaw how Adam and Eve would sin, and how, as a result of the curse that He would put on creation as a result of that sin, every single human being born into this world would also sin, indeed they would also inherit sin from Adam. Despite foreseeing the full extent of man's rebellion against Him, He still purposed to create this world and do whatever was necessary in order to bring about an end result in which men and women out of every nation on earth could dwell with Him for all of eternity without sin and without any damage as a result of sin

Gal 5:16-25

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Gal 5:23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. [ESV]

Romans 8:31-39

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died--more than that, who was raised--who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, "For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
